Padma Bridge to be opened for traffic within 2021: Obaidul Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. FILE PHOTOThe Padma Bridge will be opened for traffic in 2021 as construction works on the bridge are scheduled to be completed by the time, says Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

The minister came up with the remark while addressing a media call at the Secretariat on Thursday (Aug 29).

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate it in June 2021,” he said.

According to the minister, around 73 percent of the works on the main bridge has alreday been completed.

Works on the connecting roads have been completed and 31 out of 42 piers have been erected so far, he said, adding that the remaining piers will be erected by December this year.

As many as 27 trusses of the bridge have arrived at the Mawa portion and 14 of the spans have been installed, he said.

The minister also said that out of the 2,959 pre-truss slabs required for the bridge, 2,754 have already been made while the rest will be ready by September.
