Law enforcement agencies are on the alert ahead of the National Morning Day to be observed on Aug 15.
Considering the contexts behind the National Mourning Day, the Aug 17 Series Bomb Attacks and the Aug 21 Grenade Attacks, the law enforcement agencies suspect that anti-liberation forces, terrorist organisations, vested quarters at home and abroad might try to create anarchy during the fateful month.
The DMP Commissioner has recently received an intelligence report from the Special Branch of Police on security threats from various quarters during the month of August.
All police units across the country have received information of the report and been alerted to ramp up security measures and surveillance monitoring.
Security measures have been tightened accordingly throughout the country, with the main emphasis on the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzuman Mia said that security measures have been tightened in the capital in accordance with intelligence reports ahead of Aug 15.
The report alerted the police headquarters of all past attacks that have been made during the month and that extremism had become a global phenomenon which also could have implications for Bangladesh.
The report stated that although the activities of most extremist organisations in the country had been contained, these forces had not entirely ceased to exist while political forces had been cornered during the consecutive terms of Awami League was trying to sabotage the government’s development efforts.
The report mentioned the recent emergence of self-radicalised ‘Lone Wolf Gangs’ who might been linked to international terrorist organisations with emphasis on the fact that banned extremist organisations such as JMB, Neo JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team and Hizbut Tahrir might try to make their presence felt in August.
In light of the intelligence report, the law enforcement agencies were working round the clock to ensure the utmost security for Prime Minister Sheikh as Awami League plans to hold month long programmes to mark the 44th death anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
As part of the beefed up security measures, the law enforcement agencies are conducting raids at terrorist dens, messes, hostels, hotels, slums and residential areas of Dhaka.
DMP and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit are conducting block raids across the capital while stepping up surveillance at major points of the city.
Directives have been issued to ensure the security of Very Important Persons (VIP) and foreign nationals residing in the country alongside maintaining security of public places like Hajj camps, bus terminals, railway stations, airports, cinemas, places of worship, police and other law enforcement agency headquarters.
A DMP official said that they had taken massive precautions based on the threat analysis reports obtained.
The police are conducting similar drives in the rest of the country to make no sure no security breach occurs.
