Dengue outbreak: Two die, nearly 2,100 cases reported

The deaths were reported from capital Dhaka and the northern district of Rajshahi.
In Dhaka, a fifth-grader has died after being diagnosed with dengue at a hospital.
Avijit Saha, 11, from Narayanganj city's Amlapara area, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital's Gandaria around 1am.
The boy "had been suffering from fever for a few days. After running a dengue test and finding it to be positive, his parents admitted him to Ajgor Ali Hospital on Aug 8," said Mohammad Imtiaz, civil surgeon of Narayanganj.
"As his condition deteriorated on Sunday (Aug 11) night, he was shifted to the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) where died later at night," he added.
With this, a total of five people from Narayanganj died of dengue.
In Rajshahi, another man has died of dengue, reports our correspondent.
Abdul Malek, from Chapai Nawabganj's Sadar upazila, died at Rajshahi medical college hospital on Monday noon.
The man "was infected by the dengue virus while he was in Dhaka. His condition deteriorated after he returned home to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha," said Dr Saiful Ferdous, deputy director of the hospital.
Malek was admitted to the hospital on Monday morning and soon shifted to intensive care unit (ICU) in critical condition and died at noon, he added.
According to the official count, the tally of the dengue fever-related deaths so far this year has risen to 40 while the unofficial estimates show the toll nears 80.
DENGUE OUTBREAK CONTINUES
As many as 842 people infected with dengue have been admitted to different hospitals in the capital and another 1,251 elsewhere on Monday amid the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Fifty-one percent of dengue patients have been newly admitted while 49 of the patients have been released after treatment between Aug 6 and 12, said the DGHS's Emergency Health Operations Centre and Control Room.
As many as 43,271 people have been infected with dengue so far since Jan 1 while an estimated 35,225 patients have been released after treatment, it said.
As of Monday, the tally of dengue patients being treated in hospitals across Bangladesh stands at 8,006 with the number of cases on the rise outside the capital, said the health department.
According to the data received from the Control Room, a total of 1,159 dengue cases were reported in Dhaka and 1,167 others elsewhere.
The number of patients being treated in Dhaka stands at 842 on Monday while the number outside Dhaka has risen to 1,251, it added.
