No fare hikes during Eid: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. FILE PHOTORoad Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that ticket prices could not be hiked at all centering the Eid-ul Adha.

He said, “Instructions have been given to take immediate measures if extra ticket prices are charged during Eid.”

Quader the remarks on Monday (Aug 5) at a views-exchange meet with the media held at his ministry.

Covered vans could not ply on the roads on seven days before and after Eid except for vehicles carrying cattle, relief, perishables and emergency medicines, said the minister.

He added that wreckers, tow trucks and helicopters had been kept ready for emergency purposes.

He said that instructions had been given to the district administration and highway police to ensure that cattle-laden trucks did not encounter extortion or obstructions from reaching their desired destinations.

The concerned authorities had also been instructed to prevent plying of unfit vehicles on the roads and highways and passengers from boarding these vehicles.

The minister informed the media that the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) authorities had been urged to grant leave to the garment workers in three phases on Aug 8, 9 and 10 to prevent traffic congestion.

The media was also told that instructions had been given to repair the damaged roads with help of extra workers and to stop Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s (BRTA) operations on the Tongi-Gazipur road.
