Japan has proposed to play the role as a mediator between Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a solution to the Rohingya crisis, says Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.
"Japan wants Bangladesh and Myanmar to sit at the same table in Tokyo to facilitate mediation talks," he told the media in Dhaka on Tuesday (Jul 30) after talks with his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono.
Asked on Dhaka's position, Momen said that they informed Kono that Bangladesh "will consider Japan's proposal."
The minister says that his Japanese counterpart will convey Bangladesh's message to Myanmar apart from sharing his own observation.
At the meeting, the two sides also stressed the necessary steps to be taken by Myanmar to create a conducive environment in Rakhine for a safe return of Rohingyas under UN supervision.
Momen said that he informed Kono that situations may get worse due to delay in Rohingya repatriation and Japanese investment in Bangladesh and Myanmar would be protected as soon as Rohingyas return home.
The Japanese minister, who arrived in Dhaka on Monday, visited Rohingya camps on Tuesday to see the situation on the ground and will leave for Yangon on Wednesday to talk to Myanmar authorities over the Rohingya issue.
