Heavy rainfall has inundated parts of Dhaka, disrupting city dwellers’ lives and causing gridlock in many places by bringing traffic to a halt.
Heavy rain began around 12:30pm on Friday (Jul 12) and continued throughout the day, caused water logging in many areas.
Many major roads like Mirpur Road, Nayapaltan, Green Road, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and Motijheel became submerged due to the heavy rain.Low-lying areas at Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Rampura, Banani-11, Tejgaon, Karwan Bazar, Monipuri para, Kazipara, Begum Rokeya Sarani, Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi were also inundated.
The situation worsened in areas like Malibagh and Rokeya Sharani where road renovation works and different development projects, including the Metro Rail one are underway.
The water entered many low-lying homes and business establishments, leaving people stranded.
Lack of public transport and heavy gridlock in major roads where the areas were inundated, made it extremely difficult for city dwellers to commute. Motor vehicles were seen stuck in water with their engines drowned in knee-deep water.
Many people were seen wading through the water to reach their destinations.
The Met office recorded 48mm of rainfall between 12pm and 2pm in Dhaka.
