Complication regarding the bio-metric registration of Rohingyas hasn’t been settled as yet. Reportedly, as the passport department does not have access to the database, Rohingyas are making Bangladesh passports with the help of brokers.
Meanwhile, relevant people say that the work to create biometric registration database will end by December, 2019.
Once the database is linked to the passport department, chances of having fake passport done will fall.
Currently, 1,158,259 Rohingyas are residing in Bangladesh. Of this, 39,841 are orphans.
On May 10, 2019, 24 Rohingyas were arrested from Khilkhet in the capital; detectives say that the Rohingyas were also being taught Bangla. From the arrested people, 56 passports were recovered.
The Rohingyas were arrested when they were trying to go to Malaysia.
On May 19 last, 5 Rohingyas were arrested at the airport while they were boarding a flight to the middle-east.
Intelligence agencies believe that many Rohingyas have fled the country using Bangladeshi passports; in addition, some groups are working to send Rohingyas to Thailand, Malaysia and other countries.
Unless, they are prevented, the image of the country will be scarred, observed detectives.
Reportedly, Rohingyas are having passports made with false birth certificates. Additional DG of passport department, A T M Abu Asad, says: “Work is underway and soon, the matter will be resolved.”
Relief and repatriation commissioner, Mohammad Abul Kalam, says, “Once the work of the database is done, it will be connected to the passport office.”
