The High Court has issued a rule directing against arresting BNP leaders and activists in Gazipur City Corporation and instructed the attorney general to inform its order to the authorities immediately.
Gazipur is set to go to polls on Tuesday to elect the mayor and councillors.
The court’s order came on Monday after the initial hearing of a petition by the BNP’s mayoral candidate Hasan Sarker.
Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir issued the rule seeking explanation as to why they should not be directed against indiscriminate arrest of BNP supporters and activists in Gazipur.
Home secretary, election commissioners, inspector general of police, Gazipur’s superintendent of police are among the respondents who have ordered to come up with explanations by two weeks.
The court instructed Attorney General Mahbubey Alam to inform the order to the respondents immediately.
