Miscreants tried but failed: EC on final phase UZ polls

Election Commissio Secretary Md Alamgir Apart from some sporadic incidents, the fifth and final phase of the Upazila council elections have been held in a fair and peaceful manner, says the Election Commission.
“Miscreants tried to create anarchy in one or two voting centres but they failed,” its Secretary Md Alamgir said while briefing the media after the polling on Tuesday (Jun 18).
Overall the voting was held fairly at all polling stations apart from some isolate incidents, according to EC Secretary Alamgir.
“For instance, miscreants tried to snatch the EVM (electronic voting machine) at a Brahmanbaria centre, but failed and they were arrested. The voting was suspended for a while but resumed after the re-installing the EVM,” he said.
The EC official said some people tried to stuff ballots at a centre and even stamped five ballot papers. “The ballots were cancelled and they were arrested as well,” he added.
Voting took place in 20 Upazilas in the final phase of the fifth Upazila council election.
They are Nakla in Sherpur, Naldanga in Natore, Kamarkhand in Sirajganj, Sundarganj in Gaibandha, Rangabali in Patuakhali, Taltali in Barguna, Narayanganj port, Gazipur Sadar, Kalukhali in Rajbari, Shayestaganj in Habiganj, Madaripur Sadar, Bijoynagar in Brahmanbaria, Noakhali Sadar, Poba in Rajshahi, Purbadhala in Netrokona, Jamalganj in Sunamganj, Katiyadi in Kishoreganj, Mathbaria in Pirojpur, Chhagalnaiya in Feni and Dumuria in Khulna.
The voting took place in at least 450 Upazilas in four phases in March.
