Nearly 650,000 live in Dhaka slums: Minister

"According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics' 2014 census on slum dwellers and floating population, 499,019 people live in 1,639 slums in Dhaka North city while another 147,057 live in 1,754 slums in Dhaka South," he told the parliament on Sunday (Jun 16).
Replying to a query from lawmaker Haji Md Selim, the minister said, the highest number of slums — 472— falls under the jurisdiction of the city's Adabar police while only four slums – the lowest, are under Motjheel police.

The government continues to undertake projects to develop slum dwellers' living standard with a project funded by UNDP and UKAID is under way in Dhaka North city, Tazul informed the House.
