Over a hundred houses have collapsed and trees have been uprooted in Chandpur around 3:30am on Saturday (May 4).The central bank has halted loan recovery for a year from farmers affected by cyclone Fani.
Bangladesh Bank published a gazette notification on Sunday (May 15) ordering top bank officials to reschedule the farmers’ loans, approve loans speedily, and relax the down-payment policies.
The gazette said that there should be no delay or harassment in the Fani-affected farmers receiving loans.
“If needed the employees of the bank will go the scene and inspect the area,” it read.
It also said that the banks could also write off the interest on a case-to-case basis, if the farmers apply for it.
The banks have also been told to not sue farmers for loan default and resolve the existing cases and keep the central bank updated with all the information.
