The matter was decided on Wednesday (May 15) during a meeting of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The e-passports will be issued from July,” committee chief Faruk Khan told the media after the meeting ended.
In the last few years the offices have mulled over extending the validity of a passport from five years to ten years keeping in mind the migrant workers.
The extension in validity would mean increasing the number of pages in the passport which is currently 48.
The meeting also addressed the issue of grievances from the migrant workers against the Bangladeshi missions abroad.
The foreign ministry meanwhile, shot down the allegations saying that most of the complaints were related to other ministries.
The committee, however, said that any matter outside the country is the missions’ concern and they have to take steps to resolve the issues.
The committee has also advised the foreign ministry to coordinate with the expatriates welfare and home ministry if needed.
