The Election Commission offices in Dhaka`s Agargaon. File PhotoThe Election Commission has fixed Jun 24 for voting in the by-election Bogura-6 parliamentary seat, which was vacated as BNP Secretary General did not take oath to his office.
According to the schedule announced on Wednesday (May 8), the deadline for filing nominations ends on May 23. Officials will scrutinise those on May 27 and the last day to withdraw candidacy is Jun 3.
The Commission has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the by-polls.
The seat was declared vacant on Apr 30 as senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul refused to take oath following the party’s five other MPs-elect joined the parliament.
The BNP has said its five leaders took oath in line with instructions by acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, who is in a self-exile in London.
Earlier this week, Mirza Fakhrul said that the party admits that the decision to boycott parliament immediately after the Dec 30 polls.
“Only catchy slogans for politics will not work. Our acting chairman [Tarique Rahman] took the right decision. We’ve to fight from both inside and outside. We’ve to speak from inside and outside,” he said.
