Late DNCC mayor wanted to construct three more water parks and water surrounded areas like Hatirjheel but after his sudden death, the projects are caught in red tape. The Jal Nisarga project wanted to add more nature, water and greenery to Dhaka city. It’s found that Annisul Huq’s successor, current mayor Atriqul Islam, has taken initiative to activate the dormant projects. While serving as mayor, Huq died on 30 Nov, 2017 in a hospital in London and until death, was determined to develop Dhaka as a modern and safe city.
During his tenure as mayor, he carried out massive changes in DNCC and unveiled the Jal Nisarga project. There was also plan to create a water body from the back side of Kalyanpur to Gabtoli and a canal from Rampura-Trimohoni.
He also wanted to create 87 parks and open areas. Other work included: construction of U-turns to ease traffic, modern footpath, foot- over bridge, accommodation for slum people etc.
He was also working to start mobile schools. However, after his death, all his projects have stalled.
Relevant sources said that after his death, the PM asked relevant people to take up the unfinished work of Annisul Huq.
Mayor Atiqul Islam, says: “I took over only one and a half months ago and had to deal with student movement plus fire accidents; we will raise the Jal Nisarga in the next meeting.”
He also said that files have started to move and will be sent to the planning ministry from LGRD.
“The canal in front of Banasree belongs to Dhaka WASA and we will talk to them to find out a way to make it attractive.”
The new mayor promised to advance with Huq’s initiatives, adding: “If the government wants then the best move would be to give swift approval to the projects.”
