The World Press Freedom Day is being observed in Bangladesh along with the rest of the world on Friday (May 3).
This year’s theme is ‘Media for democracy: Journalism and elections in times of disinformation’
May 3 has been marked as World Press Freedom Day by the UN General Assembly since December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference.
The day is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
UNESCO has organised a three-day international conference at Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa in honour of the day.
Journalists and media organisations in Bangladesh have also organised various programmes to observe the day.
