Bangladesh is now home to over 1 million Rohingyas after nearly 700,000 fled Myanmar since August 2017. REUTERSBangladesh is providing humanitarian assistance to Rohingyas despite its resource constraint and fiscal pressure.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith in his budget speech placed before the parliament Thursday said, “As per the instructions of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, we are providing housing, security, medical care and other humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas despite our resource constraints and fiscal pressure.”
He was of the view that, “The rehabilitation and safe repatriation of the Rohingya people will not be expedited without international initiative.”
The government is actively engaged with Myanmar to repatriate the displaced Rohingyas while seeking agreement on ensuring their security, rights and livelihoods.
“A Joint Working Group has been formed to implement the practical aspects of repatriation besides signing an agreement with Myanmar,” he said.
The diplomatic engagement is continued with the international partners including the United Nations for creating pressure on Myanmar, he added.
Bangladesh is home to over 1.1 million Rohingyas who fled their motherland as they faced crime against humanity by military junta there.
After August 25, there are over 30,000 pregnant ladies, about 36,000 orphans and about 7,800 children whose both parents were missing fled to Bangladesh.
