The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal 2 as a deep depression over equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southern Bay of Bengal has moved northwards and intensified into cyclone ‘Fani’ on Saturday (Apr 27).
It’s likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction towards Andhra and Tamil Nadu coasts of India, meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallik told Bangla Tribune.The Met office said in a special bulletin that the cyclonic storm was centred on 3pm on Saturday about 1,935 km south of Chattogram, 1855 km of Cox’s Bazar,1925 km of Mongla and 1880 km Payra.
“Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre,” it said.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised not to venture into the deep sea and to proceed with caution.
According to the forecast for the next 24 hours, rain and thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka divisions and the regions of Cumilla and Noakhali with hails at isolated places.
Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, it said.
The maximum temperature in Bangladesh on Saturday was recorded 37.2 degrees Celsius in Jashore while in Dhaka, the mercury rose to 36.2 degrees Celsius.
Mild heat wave is sweeping over Khulna division and the regions of Barishal, Patuakhali, Sylhet and Faridpur, which it may continue, says the forecast.
The Met office said day temperature may rise slightly over Khulna, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions and may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere over the country. Night temperature may rise slightly over the country.
