The body of Awami League Presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim’s grandson Zayan Chowdhury, who was killed in the bomb attacks in Sri Lanka, has been brought to Dhaka.
"The flight carrying Zayan landed around 12.40pm at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday (Apr 24)," Abdullah Al Faruk, Director of the airport, told Bangla Tribune.
AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said that his family members received the body at the airport.
His body was taken to Sheikh Selim’s Banani residence at around 1.30pm.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who returned from Brunei on Tuesday (Apr 23) went to the residence of Selim, her cousin to console the bereaved family.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, senior AL leader Tofail Ahmed and the ruling party’s acting General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif along with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Foreign Minister Minister AKM Abdul Momen, AL lawmaker Pankaj Debnath, the party’s Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, the party’s Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque, opposition leader Roushon Ershad, DNCC mayor Atikul Islam also went to Sheikh Selim’s residence to pay their respects.
At least 359 people were killed and over 500 injured in bomb blasts that ripped through churches and luxury hotels in Colombo on Easter Sunday (Apr 21), the first major attack on the Indian Ocean island since the end of a civil war a decade ago.
Zayan, one of the two sons of Sheikh Selim’s daughter Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia, died in an explosion in the hotel where the family was staying.
His father Mashiul Haque Chowdhury Prince was also injured in the blast and now being treated at a local hospital in critical condition.
The eight-year-old was having breakfast with his father at a restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel in Colombo that came under attack along with several other hotels and churches during Easter Sunday celebrations.
Zayan’s younger brother Zohan Chowdhary and mother Sheikh Amina Sultana Sonia were in their hotel room during the blast. The family went to Sri Lanka on a vacation.
