Water transport workers' strike suspended

Water vessel workers’ federation has postponed the strike. The strike has been postponed from 6am on Wednesday (Apr 17), informed State Minister for Labour and Employment, Begum Monnuzan Sufian.
The workers agreed to postpone the strike on the promise that in the next 45 days, salary as per the new structure will be implemented.
On Tuesday (Apr 16), the minister had a long meeting with the workers till midnight and then made the declaration.
At the meet it was said that after consultation with the home ministry, steps will be taken to prevent extortion by police on the river ways.
On Tuesday around 6.30pm, labour leaders sat with state minister Monnuzan with their 11-point demand.
The demands include, stoppage of extortion, torture on river ways, ensuring social safety for water vessel workers, payment of Tk 1 million as compensation to a worker’s family in case of death, introduction of night time allowance plus special allowance for going to the sea.
