Resolution against Myanmar in UN General Assembly today

UN general assembly session (File Photo)As part of the international pressure on the Rohingya issue, a resolution in Myanmar's human rights situation is being brought to the United Nations General Assembly. In this context, a foreign ministry official said, "We have been working on this issue for a long time and hopefully the proposal will be raised on today (Tuesday)."

Though the Third committee of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) General Assembly has brought the resolution, and Bangladesh has played a major role in this, said the official. However, he did not say anything more about the resolution.

Earlier, Bangladesh has supported Myanmar in all the resolutions brought against Myanmar in the United Nations General Assembly or the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. But due to Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh is now investing the highest diplomatic efforts to bring a resolution against Myanmar.

Meanwhile, a permanent member of UNSC and chairman for the month of October, France and another permanent member Britain are trying to bring another resolution.

Another diplomatic source said, before the expiry of France's tenure, they have tried to raise and pass the resolution condemning Myanmar. But the opposition of the China will not help it to make it possible.

A diplomat in the condition of anonymity said, “On Monday Bangladeshi and Chinese officials working in the UN sat in a meeting. But it has not brought any change in Beijing's position.”

Another official from the Foreign Ministry said, “European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides will reach Dhaka on Monday night. He will visit Cox's Bazar on Tuesday and will hold a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Wednesday.”

The official said, "For the first time in the last few years, a ministerial-level official from the European Union is visiting Bangladesh. The European Union has taken strong positions against Myanmar on Rohingya issue and recently they have decided not to invite the Myanmar generals.”

On the other hand, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque is going to the United Kingdom on Tuesday to fortify the Rohingya issue. There he will give a lecture on Rohingya issue at a college of Oxford University on Thursday. Foreign ministerial-level meetings between Bangladesh and the UK are also expected.

In addition, on the next Thursday, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration of the USA, Simon Henshaw will visit Dhaka. The US Embassy in Bangladesh has said that he will come to Dhaka from Myanmar.

It is mentioned that, since August 25, Myanmar security forces have started attacks and torture newly on innocent Rohingyas who are living in the Rakhine state of Myanmar for hundreds of years. Till now, around 6 lakh Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh.
