Tasvir Ul Islam, one of the owners of Banani's blaze-hit FR Tower, has been granted bail on charges of several irregularities relating to the building's construction.
A Dhaka court on Thursday (Apr 11), granted him bail in a case filed over the fatal fire on Mar 28 that killed 27 people, including a fire fighter.
Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Tasvir.
On Apr 8, another Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court rejected bail petitions of SMHI Faruque, the owner of the land on which the 22-storey building was constructed, and Tasvir Ul Islam and sent them to jail on expiry of seven-day remand.
Earlier on Mar 31, a Metropolitan Magistrate court granted seven-day remand for the duo accused in a case filed with Banani police station.
Faruque was arrested from Bashundhara Residential Area on March 30 while BNP leader Tasvir — one of the owners of the illegally built top floors of the high-rise — was arrested from his Baridhara home on Mar 30.
Banani police Sub-Inspector Milton Datta filed the case, accusing the two along with Rupayan Group Chairman Liaquat Ali Khan the same day.
Real estate company Rupayan Housing erected the 23-floor FR Tower on a land owned by engineer Faruque in Banani's Kamal Ataturk Avenue.
The ownership of the building was jointly held by the land owner and the developer. Hence, it was named Faruque Rupayan Tower, or FR Tower in short.
Tasvir, a member of the BNP’s central committee and the president of the party’s Kurigram wing, is Managing Director and CEO of Quasem Industries Limited.
His firm has its offices on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd floors of FR Tower. Tasvir is also president of the building’s management committee.
