Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. File photoIndia has assured Bangladesh that it would pressure Myanmar on the Rohingya issue, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
She was speaking at a press conference on her recent visit to India at her official residence the Ganabhaban on Wednesday.
She went to India on May 25 on a two-day trip to inaugurate Bangladesh Bhaban at Shantiniketon in West Bengal where she had separate meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“We discussed about Rohingya issue. You know the Indian government is providing enough aid for them. India assured of mounting pressure on Myanmar,” Hasina said.
Meanwhile, on Monday Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj at a press briefing said it is the beginning of a big achievement that Myanmar verified 1,222 Rohingyas and sent the list to Bangladesh for repatriation.
Sushma defended Nay Pyi Taw by saying, “It is not true that Myanmar refused to take them [Rohingyas] back.” Responding on a question that India sided with Myanmar, she said, Bangladesh never made such allegation.
It is mentionable over 1.1 million Rohingyas had to flee from Rakhine due to a military crackdown started on August 25 last year.
