ASEAN nations are working to create an environment conducive for the Rohingyas in Myanmar’s Rakhine, says Foreign Minister AKA Momen.
His remarks came on Wednesday (Apr 3) after talks with his Thai counterpart at the state guest house Padma.
Thailand is the current chair of the ASEAN.
“The Thai minister is in Dhaka to discuss the Rohingya crisis. He told us that they want to play a significant role and we asked them to help create a safe environment in Rakhine for the Rohingyas,” said Momen.
An ASEAN delegation is now in Rakhine and will file its findings soon, according to the foreign minister.
“Bangladesh prime minister has proposed a safe zone [in Rakhine for Rohingyas] but Myanmar is reluctant on it,” he said.Talks with Washington
Momen said he would be travelling to the US on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s invitation.
The talks in Washington will include the Rohingya crisis, bilateral trade, investment among other issue.
“However, we have another priority, which is extradition of Bangabandhu murder convict Rashed Chowdhury. We will discuss the issue and pitch a proposal,” said the foreign minister.
