Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. File PhotoSpeaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said if the six elected BNP leaders take oath as MPs they will be given the chance to speak in parliament.
“Whether they take oath or not is purely up to them but if they do then they will be given the floor.”
The speaker made the comments during a visit to Delhi recently.
Sultan Muhammad Mansur (Gano Forum) took oath as an MP earlier and, on Tuesday (Apr 2), Mokabbir Khan, another victorious candidate from Gano Forum took oath, which leaves the BNP winners who have not taken oath as yet.
As a major opposition party, they will be given the floor, and I will ensure it, the speaker commented.
Saying that the parliament session began on Jan 30 this year, she added, “The winning candidates will have to take oath as MPs within 90 days from the start of session, otherwise their membership will be cancelled.”
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury came to India with a large team from Bangladesh parliament; in Delhi, she met officials of IMF and took part at a special Independence Day event at the Bangladesh High Commission on Mar 26.
