The Election Commission (EC) Tuesday announced the election schedule for three city corporations – Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet – fixing July 30 as the Election Day.
Making the announcement, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda said this schedule will be effective from June 13.
According to the schedule, date for submission of nomination papers is from June 13 to June 28. July 1-2 have been fixed for scrutinising the nominations and July 3-5 have been fixed for submitting appeals, while July 6-8 for appeal settlements. July 9 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination, and July 10 for distribution of symbols.
The CEC said, “No candidate will be allowed to participate in election campaign from June 13 to July 10.”
About legal complexities, the CEC said, “We have got a letter from local government ministry informing that there is no legal complexity.”
In reply to a query of a reporter over whether the lawmakers can take part in the campaign, CEC Huda said, “The code of conduct we have prepared has not been amended yet. It can’t be said now.”
Commissioner Rafiqul Islam said, “The amendment we proposed is being scrutinised now. It will be sent to the law ministry for vetting after scrutinizing is done. If we can complete the whole process and issue a gazette notification by June 13, lawmakers will be able to take part in these city polls.”
