41.41% turnout in third phase Upazila polls

The voter turnout was 41.41 percent in the third phase of the Upazila Council elections, says Election Commission (EC).
As many 116 Upazilas went to polls on Sunday (Mar 24) with voting suspended at an Upazila on allegation of irregularities, EC said on Monday (Mar 25).
Ruling Awami League candidates dominated the polls bagging chairman post at as many as 83 Upazilas – 52 were elected uncontested.
Independent candidates won at 38 Upazilas and Jatiya Party bagged one.
With over 18.2 million voters, 7.5 million people casted ballots in the third phase of the election while 165,000 votes went invalided, the EC said after gathering the field data.
Election to some 480 Upazilas out of 492 across Bangladesh is being held in five phases with first one held on Mar 10.
The second and third phase of the election was held on Mar 18 and Mar 24 respectably while fourth and the fifth phase elections are scheduled to be held on Mar 31 and Jun 18.
