Students, demonstrating for safer roads following the death of their peer on a Dhaka road, have halted their protests until Mar 28.
The announcement came after a meeting between representative of protesters and Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam on Wednesday (Mar 20).
“We have held a long meeting with the mayor, who has accepted all of the demands. We have said the police probe in to the investigation and the filing of the chargesheet with the court has to be done by 30 days. The mayor has assured us,” Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Towhiduzzaman, a spokesperson for the protesters, told the media.
He said the mayor has assured them to chalk out a plan to ensure road safety by seven day and implementation of it by 30 days.
“We are set for meeting with the mayor again on Mar 28 and until then our demonstrations will remain halted,” said the BUP student.

BUP student Abrar Ahmed Chowhdury was ran over and killed by a ‘Supravat Paribahan’ bus on the morning of Tuesday near the Jamuna Future Park in the capital.
BUP students took to the streets and shouted demands for punishment to the bus driver. The driver was subsequently arrested and the vehicle seized by the police.
Students from different institutions in the area also joined the protests demanding safer roads.
His family started a case later the same day with the Gulshan police.
On Wednesday morning, protesters once again took to the streets near Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka with students in other parts of the capital following suit. Traffic in the city ground to a halt amid protests in Shahbagh, Dhanmondi, Science Laboratory crossing and Old Dhaka.
Abrar, the elder of the two brothers, lived with his family in Block D of Bashundhara Residential Area. His father, Arif Ahmed Chowdhury, retired as a brigadier general of the Bangladesh Army.
Abrar enrolled into BUP in 2018 after completing the A Level. He was laid to rest in the capital's Banani Graveyard on Tuesday evening.
