Deposit money of most candidates forfeited

Atiqul Islam. In the 1295 centres, a total of 942,539 votes were cast. The deposits of Jatiya Party’s Shafin Ahmed, NDP’s Md. Anisur Rahman Dewan, PDP’s Shahin Khan and independent candidate Md. Abdur Rahim were forfeited.
A total of 942,539 votes were cast in 1295 centres. AL candidate Md. Atiqul Islam won with 839,302 votes.
The total number of voters at DNCC is 3.04 million and 31.05 percent votes were cast. If any area has more than 2 million votes, Tk 100,000 is usually the deposit.
Tk 100,000 is the deposit if any electoral area has more than 2 million voters. Since the voter number is 3.04 million the deposit was fixed at Tk 100,000.
To save the deposit, a candidate had to get 117,817 votes.
Apart from Atiqul Islam, no one got the required number of votes.
JP’s Md. Shafin Ahmed got 52429 votes, Md. Anisur Rahman Dewan got 8695 votes, independent candidate Md Abdur Rahim got 14040 votes and PDP’s Shahin Khan got 8560 votes.
Returning Officer Abul Kashem said, “Due to heavy rain, voter presence was sparse though there were plenty of voters in ward councilor election centres.”
The main opposition parties of the country boycotted the votes. DNCC’s post of mayor became vacant when Mayor Annisul Huq died on Nov 30, 2017.
In February, 2018, the election commission declared schedule for a by-election.
