The Pilkhana carnage in 2009 left 74 people including 57 army officers dead.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Monday marks ten years of the bloody BDR mutiny, which left 74 people including 57 army officers dead.
The mutiny by some members of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) had started in the Pilkhana headquarters of the border guards in the capital Dhaka on Feb 25, 2009 and ended the following day.
The mutiny had spread to other BDR camps across the country but no killing was reported outside Dhaka.
The incident also drew international concern. After the mutiny, BDR was renamed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and its uniform changed.
Eight years later in 2017, the High Court awarded death penalties to 139 people for their roles in the country’s bloodiest mutiny. Another 185 people were sentenced to life in prison while 228 others were jailed for various terms.
Marking the day, the BGB will organize special prayers on Monday (Feb 25) at all of its units, camps and establishments across the country, including the Pilkhana headquarters.
Representatives of the president and prime minister, home minister, chiefs of armed forces, public security secretary of the home ministry and BGB director general will pay their tributes to the slain army officers at the Banani military graveyard.
On Tuesday (Feb 26), a special prayer will be held at Pilkhana central mosque.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan will attend the prayer service as the chief guest while home affairs secretary, BGB chief, relatives of the martyrs and all officers of the BGB headquarters will attend the programme.
