Families of 11 Chawkbazar fire victims, who are undergoing treatment after sustaining life-threatening injuries, have received monetary donation on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The families were given Tk 50,000 each.
Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) President Dr Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin handed over the money to the victims’ family members around 1:15pm on Sunday (Feb 24).
Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit Coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Dhaka Medical College Director Brig Gen AKM Nasir Uddin and Burn Unit Director Prof Abul Kalam Azad were present during the occasion.
Earlier around 12:30pm, speaker of the House Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury visited the Chawkbazar fire victims at the hospital.
“The prime minister has donated each patient’s family Tk 50,000. She wants you to spend the money for the family while the expenses for the medical treatment and medicines will be provided by the hospital,” Dr Sen said while handing over the donation.
On Saturday (Feb 23), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the patients and spoke with their family members.
On Feb 20, a deadly blaze ripped through Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar, claiming at least 70 lives and injuring over 50 people.
A total of 37 fire-fighting units battled for at least 15 hours to douse the flames.
