The government is negotiating with the UN agencies to reach a consensus to relocate some Rohingyas to Bhashanchar, says Principal Secretary Nozibur Rahman.
“We are creating new facility at Bhashanchar. We are discussing with UN Resident Coordinator, UNHCR, IOM in order to reach a consensus to relocate some of the refugees,” he said.
He was speaking at the two-day annual thematic meeting of the Platform of Disaster Displacement at Hotel Intercontinental in the city on Sunday (Feb 24).
He said the government wants to relocate them to safer place as many of them are in risk of landslide in the imminent monsoon.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen after the inaugural session told the reporters that they are working on Rohingya crisis but it is a big problem.
He said we have to maintain minimum standard of living for the Rohingyas.
“I often say human rights are rights to have food, rights to have shelter. You (journalists) sometimes make hue and cry as some people cannot talk freely, but you don’t say we are providing them food and shelter,” he said.
French ambassador to Bangladesh Marrie Annick Bourdin said number of displacement especially in South Asia has dramatically increased due to climate change.
France is going to take over the chair of Platform of Disaster Displacement in June from Bangladesh, the current chair.
IOM Director for Global Compact for Migration Michele Klein Solomon said there was a meek response from the international community when there was disaster displacement.
She said, but now the situation is changing and we are hopeful of having more response in the coming days.
