Despite being millionaires, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor candidates Awami League’s Atiqul Islam has no car and Nationalist Democratic Movement’s (NDM) Bobby Hajjaj own no house, according to their statements filed with Election Commission.
Affidavits show three of the five mayor aspirants are millionaires. The DNCC is scheduled to go to polls on Feb 28.
RMG entrepreneur Atiqul owns 16 companies. His annual income is over Tk 10 million, which mostly comes from businesses and real estate.
The 58-year-old former BGMEA president holds Bachelors’ degree in Commerce.
His wife Shaila Shagufta Islam earns over Tk 2 million annually and owns gold jewelleries weighing 30 Bhori (1 bhori = 11.66 gram), according to the affidavits.
Atiqul’s tangible assets include Tk 87,063 cash, $1,576.13 in foreign currencies in banks, and over Tk 11 million deposited in banks and financial institutions.
He also has over Tk 37.5 million of bonds and shares of listed and non-listed companies.
Atiqul owns gold worth Tk 200,000, electronic products worth Tk 500,000 and furniture worth Tk 500,000.
Among his immovable assets is 1074 decimal arable land worth around Tk 41.4 million, infertile land of Tk 2.6 million, and houses and apartments with Tk 25.7 million.
Atiqul also has a home loan of Tk 11 million.
The NDM’s candidate Bobby, son of controversial tycoon Musa Bin Shamser, works as a teacher at North South University as well as runs business.
An MBA holder, Bobby is the director of DATCO Group. He has a car but no home to his name.
Forty-one-year-old Bobby earns Tk 327,027 from teaching and Tk 12,412 from other sources annually.
His intangible assets include cash Tk 5.4 million, a bank deposit of Tk 1.3 million, and Tk 10,000 of gold. He has also lent other Tk 5 million.
His wife has 100 Bhori gold, cash Tk 45,000, deposits of Tk 4.1 million in banks and financial institutions, but no immovable assets and loan.
