To ensure safe roads, order came from the PM’s office to construct 130 bus stoppages which were duly constructed but buses never stop at these points and passengers never picked up from specified spots.
Even now, public buses pick up and drop passengers recklessly which is resulting in accidents. To inform this issue, the police have decided to give letters to BRTA and transport owners’ association.
Specialists in the meantime have asked the police to be strict in ensuring adherence of laws by transport owners and drivers.
On Sept 21, 2017, DMP commissioner, Asaduzzaman Mia, gave two letters to city corporations heads, pointing out the bus stoppages.
Of them, 70 are in north and the rest south city. In addition to bus stoppages, 38 passenger sheds were built, of which, 28 are in south and 10 in north city.In Shahbagh, passengers were found to be flouting rules to get on buses from non- designated areas.
Executive engineer of DSCC Rajib Khadem, said, “We built passenger shades at the designated spots but buses are not stopping here.”
DMP joint commissioner (south), Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, told Bangla Tribune, “We are trying to make people follow the regulations and also handing out punishment when necessary.”
However, urban specialists feel that unless bus owners are disciplined, things will not improve.
General secretary of the Dhaka transport owners association, Khondokar Enayetullah, said, “We have ordered that passengers should only be picked up or dropped from specified spots, stoppage in the system of target based service and closure of doors while a vehicle is moving.”
We are taking punitive measures against those who are disregarding these directives, he assured.
