Apart from road accidents and suicides, as many as 185 people have been killed for various reasons in Bangladesh during the first month of the year, says the human rights commission.
The Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC) said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 31) that the figure was based on inputs provided from its field offices at the districts, upazilas and municipalities.
It said that apart from field-level data, investigations were conducted on incidents reported in the media in cooperation with the International Human Rights Commission.
The figures conclude that on an average six people were killed every day in January, the BHRC said before adding that it indicates a significant deterioration in the law and order situation.
‘Social violence’ claimed most lives (64), followed by deaths under unclear circumstances (36), killing by law enforcement agencies (18) and family violence (17), according to the report. Nine political murders were also documented.
Dowry-related violence left six killed while 10 were murdered after the rape and two died in acid attacks, according to the Commission’s findings.
It said five deaths have been reported near the borders involving the Indian Border Security Force while another five people died due to the negligence of doctors and eight people were found day following abductions.
Another five people died in assassinations, says the report.
As many as 263 people were killed in road accidents across the country while 19 others killed themselves in the last month, according to the Commission.
Forty incidents of rape were reported in January, it said.
