Workers’ Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon says he is “embarrassed” about his role in the 11th National Parliament.
“We are happy about the Parliament but a little embarrassed at the same time,” he said on Wednesday (Jan 30) while thanking the Speaker and Deputy Speaker during the first session of the Parliament.
“I was asked (by the media) on our role in the House even today while coming in,” he said.
Menon, who was elected with Awami League’s boat symbol in the general election, has been an ally in the Awami League-led 14-Party Alliance since 2014.
He had also served as a minister in the 20014-18 Sheikh Hasina administration.
Menon hinted that they were being forced to take on the role of opposition.
Citing a comment by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina he said, “The PM said that the government, as well as the opposition, will consist of pro-Liberation elements.
“Her comment is absolutely logical but in a way, it means why we aren’t taking on the role of opposition.”
“We were not consulted over the matter, neither were there any discussions. As if we have to comply with the decision,” he added.
Menon, who served as the social welfare minister during the last term, said that they will criticise any flaw on the government’s part when necessary.
Speaking about the two notes of dissent that they served during the 15th Amendment, Menon said, “We will stand against any kind of corruption and transgressions just the way we will wholeheartedly support the PM’s endeavours to take the country forward.”
