Syed Ashraf’s brother to contest Kishoreganj-1 polls

Syed Shafayetul Islam (R) will be contesting for Kishoreganj-1 seat which fell vacant after the demise of his brother Syed Ashraful Islam.Syed Shafayetul Islam, brother of deceased Awami Leauge (AL) Leader Syed Ashraful Islam, has collected nomination form from the Awami League aiming to contest the polls from Kishoregang-1 seat which fell vacant after Ashraf’s demise.

Tofazzal Hossain, who served as a personal aide to Syed Ashraf, collected the form on behalf of Shafayetul Islam from the party chief’s Dhanmondi offices on Wednesday (Jan 23).  

Syed Ashraf, also former public administration minister, got re-elected from the Kishoreganj-1 seat in the Dec 30 polls.

However, the veteran AL leader breathed his last on Jan 3, on the day the elected MPs in the 11th Parliamentary Elections took oath.

On Jan 22 the Election Commission announced that the polls in the seat will be held on Feb 28.

As per the polls schedule, the last date of nomination papers submission is Jan 31 while the scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on Feb 3. The deadline for withdrawal of candidature is Feb 10.

“The voting in Kishoreganj-1 will be considered as the general election since newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) from the seat Syed Ashraful Islam died before taking oath,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said while announcing the date.
