Dhaka North City Corporation. FILE PHOTOThe Election Commission will soon sit to discuss the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-elections and announcement of polls schedule in the 36 new wards in North and South City Corporation.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda made the announcement on Wednesday (Jan 16), while speaking to the media on the High Court order clearing the DNCC mayoral by-polls earlier in the day.
Responding to queries about the schedule Huda said, “I cannot tell you about the schedule at this moment.
“The Commission has to sit down for it, but since it’s a pending issue, we will go through with it soon.”
Huda said that the by-elections will not affect the Upazila council elections in any way.
Sources at the Commission said that it’s waiting on the copy of the court order to decide the schedule, but it’s likely to be announced by late February or early March.
The by-elections are supposed to take place within 90 days in the event of a city corporation representative death or if the post becomes vacant for any other reason.
After DNCC mayor Anisul Haque passed away on November of 2017, the EC announced the by-election schedule. They announced the schedule for the ward counsellors in the 36 new wards in the two city corporations.
However, a writ was lodged with the court challenging the schedule after which the Commission halted the by-election.
Earlier on Wednesday, the HC disposed of the writ clearing the way for the by-elections.
