Heavyweights dropped as new faces crowd Cabinet

A number of heavyweight Awami League leaders, including many who previously served as ministers, have been left out from the Cabinet picks, to be sworn in on Monday (Jan 7).

The 46-strong council of ministers, announced on Sunday (Jan 6), features 24 ministers, 19 minister of states and three deputy ministers.

Twenty-four out of the last cabinet of 28 didn’t get picked while two have been promoted to ministers from ministers of state.

For her third straight term, the Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has also brought back three members, who served in her 2008-2014 term but were kept out in the next.

The heavyweight ministers of the previous cabinet who were left out are- AMA Muhith, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Mohammad Nasim, Khankader Mosharraf Hossain, Rashed Khan Menon, Mosharraf Hossain, Imajuddin Pramanik, Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, Mujibul Haque, Mostafizur Rahman, Asaduzzaman Noor, Shamsur Rahman Sherif, Advocate Qamrul Islam, Narayan Chandra Chanda and AKM Shahjahan Kamal.

Two among the four technocrat ministers in the last administration— Yeafesh Osman and Mustafa Jabbar— have been inducted in the new cabinet.

Motiur Rahman, who served as the technocrat minister for religious affairs, has been dropped as well as Chattogram’s Nurul Islam BSc, who was expatriate welfare minister in the last administration.

The previous cabinet’s state ministers, who have been dropped are Jatiya Party’s Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Awami League’s Mirza Azam, Biren Shikder, Ismat Ara Sadek, Meher Afroze, Tarana Halim, Mohammad Nazrul Islam and Kazi Keramat Ali.

Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Mannan, Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing, MA Manna, Zahid Maleque and Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, who served as state ministers in the last cabinet, are in the new council of ministers.

The two deputy ministers in the previous administration have been dropped while Hasina inducted three new faces as deputy ministers in the new Cabinet.
