President greets Hasina on third straight term

Combination of file photos shows President M Abdul Hamid (left) and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.President M Abdul Hamid has greeted Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over her landslide victory in the 11th Parliamentary Election held on Sunday (Dec 30).
“This election is the obvious reflection of people’s opinion against communalism, terrorism and militancy as well as in favour of independence, liberation struggle and development-progress,” he said in a message to the Prime Minister on Monday (Dec 31).
On behalf of the President, his Secretary Shampad Barua, Military Secretary Major General Md Sarwar Hossain and Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin handed over the message to the Prime Minister at her Ganabhaban.
The head of the state said the 11th Parliamentary Election polls will become a milestone in the history of democracy and development in Bangladesh.
“I would like to express my gratitude and warm congratulations to you for the landslide victory in the polls . . . I am also congratulating all countrymen including the elected people,” he said.
President Hamid also expressed thanks to all leaders and workers belonging to all political parties, all concerned of the electoral process and active cooperation of others concerned for holding the polls in a successful manner.
Referring to country’s historical incidents where the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was involved in all stages, the President said, “After long 21 years of the brutal assassination of him (Bangabandhu), you took charge for materializing the dream of him and the country started proceeding toward development and progress under your efficient leadership.”
Noting that Bangladesh is now being considered as “a role model of development”, Abdul Hamid hoped that the nation would celebrate two festivals – Bangabandhu’s hundred years birth anniversary in 2020 and golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence in 2021.
The President expressed his hope that the country will be established as a developed ‘Sonar Bangla’ in line with Bangabandhu’s dream being imbued with the spirit of Liberation War.
Abdul Hamid wished sound health and long life of the Prime Minister, the congratulatory message added.
