Members of the army, navy and air force have already been instructed to take up their roles as a strike force from as early as Sunday (Dec 23) midnight, according to Lt Col Alamgir Kabir, a director with the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate.

Earlier on Dec 13, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told the media that the armed forces will be deployed on Dec 24 and they will serve as a strike force until Jan 2.

Since Dec 18, 1016 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed nationwide to maintain law and order.

Each team of the armed forces will have an executive magistrate with them, according to commission sources.

Similar to the 2014’s Jan 5 polls, troops will be deployed as ‘aid to civil power’.

During the 10th parliamentary polls, troops performed polls duty for 15 days from Dec 26, 2013 to Jan 9, 2014.

Nearly 50,000 troops served on polls duty on that occasion.
