EC ‘embarrassed’ about attack on Mirza Fakhrul’s motorcade

The Election Commission has felt ‘embarrassed’ about the Tuesday attack on BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s motorcade and the pre-polls violence that claimed two lives.

“Two incidents happened yesterday (Tuesday). We are embarrassed and deeply grieved,” Chief Election Commission (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said on Wednesday (Dec 12).

The ruling AL blamed their arch-rival BNP and its allies Jamaat-e-Islami for the killings, which the later denied.

Speaking at a briefing progamme for magistrates in Dhaka, Huda CEC said, “Mirza Fakhrul’s motorcade in Thakurgaon has been attacked that’s unexpected... We never desire it.

“A life is more valuable than the election at 300 parliamentary seats... We never desire that people loss live in violence. We have to find out the way out,” he said.

The CEC urged all to be patient and follow the electoral code of conducts saying, “Avoid any activity that goes against the election.”

Huda asked the magistrate to ensure a congenial polls atmosphere saying, “Be patient and respect others in conducting the election.”

“The 11th Parliamentary Election will be very completive and different from any other polls in the previous time,”

As many as 1,841 candidates including 96 independent contenders are contesting the Dec 30 polls

This year, over 104.2 million voters will cast ballot at 40,183 polling centres across Bangladesh.
