Convicts will not be able to contest the general election until the full disposal of appeals over their participation in the polls, says Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
His remarks came on Saturday (Dec 1) while speaking to the media at his office after the High Court order over convicts contesting the 11th parliamentary election was frozen by the Supreme Court.
The disposal of the appeal has to come from a full bench of the Appellate Division, according to Alam, the state’s top legal officer.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court’s chamber judge stayed a High Court order that had allowed a convicted person to contest the upcoming general election.
It also forwarded the matter to the full appeals bench for hearing on Sunday (Dec 2).
On Thursday (Nov 29), the High Court stayed the conviction and sentence of BNP candidate from Jashore 2 Sabira Sultana in a graft case, clearing the way for her to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary election.
