A number of countries including United States, France, Denmark, and a few organizations have expressed their interest in sending observers for the upcoming national polls slated for Dec 30.

Dhaka based foreign missions including the British High Commission have also contacted the Election Commission on the matter, said a Senior government official.

“United States, France, and Denmark have already informed us that they will send polls observer,” he said adding they are expecting interest from other countries in coming days.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Commonwealth have also informed that they will observe the upcoming national election, added the official.

On Wednesday (Nov 28), prime minister’s Political Advisor HT Imam told media after meeting with US mission officials that the country will send a good number of observers.

“We assured proper security for their observers,” said Imam before adding, “We sought a list of observers.”

Earlier on Wednesday, European Union’s (EU) Bangladesh envoy Rensje Teerink said the 28-states-union will send any observers “due to lack of preparation”.

Sending a polls observation mission requires massive preparation which takes at least six months, Ambassador Rensje Teerink told the media after meeting the chief election commissioner and added that the decision came from the EU headquarters.

However, two ‘experts’ are now in Dhaka, who will be here for 40 days to observe the entire electoral process, said Teerink.
