The government has taken a Tk 35.16 billion project to repair dilapidated roads in remote areas of Bangladesh. Implemented by local government division, total funds for it will be provided by the government.
The project will begin in November and finish by Jun 30, 2021, says planning ministry sources. Due to the woeful condition of the roads, farmers are facing hurdles in marketing their produce. Consequently, poverty eradication programme is being adversely affected.
For this reason, the local government has taken up the project to repair and improve 4717 km of roads in 482 upazilas of 64 districts.
Planning ministry sources say that with improved roads, communication will become better and faster, creating employment for rural communities.
The proposal to ramp up roads was approved at the ECNEC on Nov 4. Local Government and Rural Development minister, Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain, says, “Once the roads are repaired, it will be easy to preserve rural assets and infrastructure.”
Marketing of products will be easy and an impetus will be added to the rural economy, he added.
