The scheduled time for repatriation was set at 4pm Thursday but no Rohingyas showed any interest to go back.

For the last couple of days the Bangladesh government and UN agencies worked very hard to find a group of Rohingyas who wanted to go back to Myanmar voluntarily, but failed.

The repatriation of the first batch of Rohingyas was supposed to take place on Thursday, but as it is voluntary and nobody showed willingness, it could not happen.

Refugee, Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam told journalist at Kutupalong Rohingya camp Thursday afternoon, “We talked to the Rohingyas at Unchipran camp and waited till 2pm, but nobody showed interest to go back.”

We extended the time to 4pm and didn’t get any response.

Abul Kalam said, "We will not send anyone back against their will."

“Today we showed the whole world that Bangladesh will not force any Rohingya to go back to Rakhine,” he said.

When asked when the repatriation will start, he replied, “When they (Rohingyas) voluntarily agree to go back.”

We have all the preparation in place to start the repatriation process, he said.

He said the UNHCR has interviewed 50 families on Tuesday and Wednesday and none of them agreed to go back to Myanmar.

Today the UN agency interviewed 17 families and will interview of the rest of the families, he said.

Bangladesh has handed over a list of 485 families comprised of 2,260 Rohingyas to UNHCR on Oct 28 and the agency is responsible to verify whether they voluntarily want to return to their homeland. The UN agency started interviewing of the families from Tuesday.
