EC issues circular on rescheduling polls. FILE PHOTOThe Election Commission has published the official order rescheduling the 11th Parliamentary Election.
The circular was issued Monday (Nov 12) evening, hours after Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced that the election day has been pushed back by a week to Dec 30.
It said that the Commission will now accept nominations until Nov 28, which will be scrutinised on Dec 2.
The deadline for pulling out from the race ends on Dec 9.
“They [BNP and Oikya Front] said they are interested in participating in the polls,” CEC Huda said while speaking to the media earlier on Monday. “The election commissioners discussed the matter and came to this decision.”
The CEC said the commission discussed the letter sent from the Jatiya Oikya Front requesting a deferral of the polls.
“There was some delay in getting their written proposal. We met on the matter today. But it is reassuring to the commission that the BNP and Oikya Front will take part in the polls."
The Jatiya Oikya Front opposition alliance, who called for the election to be deferred by a month on Sunday after announcing they would compete in the polls, have yet to remark on the Election Commission's decision.
