Ahead of the general election, the government is creating 230 supernumerary posts in Bangladesh Police to promote as many officials.
“We have received the approval of the Prime Minister’s Office,” Additional Secretary to Home Ministry Md Nurul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
In July, the Bangladesh Police forwarded a proposal to the home ministry for creating 495 supernumerary posts. The ministry, however, gave the green light for 230 posts.
The Bangladesh Police proposal cited the lack of senior officials compared to other public service cadres, like administration, foreign service and customs.
Citing supernumerary promotion for deputy secretaries in the administration as well as in other cadres, it proposed creating posts to promote ‘qualified and competent’ officers from superintendents to additional inspectors general.
Describing the police as a “very important state organisation”, the proposal sent to the ministry said that the force works closely with the administration representing the government at the field level.
A comparison of the organogram between the two cadres clearly points out the lack of supervising officials in the police, it said.
In October, the ministries of public administration and finance cleared the home ministry’s proposal to create 230 supernumerary grade-5 posts.
Following a nod from the Secretaries’ Committee on Administrative Reforms, the matter was forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The home ministry, however, says they are yet to decide on which police officials will be promoted.
“The Divisional Promotion Committee will decide it. There are many officers (eligible to be promoted). But those with low scores in their annual confidential reports (ACRs) will not be promoted,” Additional Secretary Md Nurul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
