Law Minister Anisul Huq (File photo)The bill for the Road Transport Act will be tabled in parliament in the upcoming budget session, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.
“The road transport and bridges ministry is working for an up to date law, covering all aspects,” he told the media on Sunday after the inaugurating a workshop for judicial officials.
In March last year, the cabinet approved the draft of the Road Transport Act with provisions of minimum educational qualification to obtain a driving licence and penalty for using mobile phones while driving.
It also kept provisions to slap fine and jail term for passengers who wrongly occupy seats reserved for women, children, elderly and handicapped people on public transports.
The Cabinet secretary had then said the 1983 Motor Vehicle Ordinance was being transformed into law following a High Court order.
On Sunday, Law Minister Huq said, “Three ministries are involved in the process to vet the after the cabinet approved the draft in 2017. We are talking to all the stakeholders before clearing it.”
He said that they were going through the ins and outs of road transportations. “We are taking a bit time to address all the issues, including the causes of road accident. It’s not that, there is no law for it now, but we are updating it.”
Replying to a query from the media, Huq said that they expect to table the bill in the upcoming budget session of the parliament.
