Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda says he hopes Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be introduced in the upcoming national election.
“Amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) for using EVMs have been proposed which will be placed in the House. Once the parliament approves, it can be used,” the CEC told the media on Saturday after inaugurating EVM awareness campaign in Khulna.
He also said that implementation of e-voting system is not enough without raising awareness among the people first.
The CEC said, “Countdown for the polls will begin from Oct 30 and the polls schedule is likely to be announced in November given the obligation to hold the election by Jan 28.”
Huda recommended politicians, who have taken a stance against introduction of EVMs, to know about it first before passing remarks.
EVMs make voting and counting a lot easier than traditional methods, the CEC said before adding, “Introduction of EVMs will be possible after creating awareness and clearing the legal hurdles.”
On deploying of troops for the election, Huda said that army can be deployed if it’s necessary for the sake of free and fair polls.
