Obaidul Quader (File Photo)The road management system is not responsible for the death of a college student in Dhaka, who had lost an arm, but reckless driving, says Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader.

Speaking to media on Wednesday in Dhaka, he referred to a report ran by a ‘leading newspaper’ and said, “How is this related to road management? It’s just like the VC’s residence being attacked in the wake of anti-quota protests.”

According to Quader, mismanagement in the transport sector can be held liable for the death. “Reckless driving has caused it.”

Titumir College student Rajib Hossain died early Tuesday, two weeks after he had lost an arm and suffered grave injuries in the head in an accident involving two buses in Dhaka.

On Apr 3, the 22-year-old was on his way to college from his Jatrabari home when the accident took place at the capital’s Karwan Bazar.

Police said he was standing at the entrance of a crowded BRTC-operated double-decker bus, which was at the traffic signal near the fountain at the intersection.

When a Swajan Paribahan-operated bus tried to make its way through, his arm was caught between the buses and severed from the elbow.

He was rushed to Panthapath’s Samorita Hospital and transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) the next day.

On Apr 10, he was put on life support when he began having breathing difficulty at intensive care of the DMCH.

He also appeared less ‘conscious’ of his surroundings than he was before. Dr Shamsuzzaman, the chief of the medical board formed for his care, said at the time, “This happens in the case of a head injury.”

The head injuries left Rajib with broken bones in the front and back of his head.

Rajib, who lost his both parents a few years ago, is survived by two school-going brothers.
